Implant Supported Dentures

As you get older, your teeth can become damaged by decay, chipped or fractured, or can fall out. In such a situation, your dentist will likely suggest the placement of an implant-supported partial or full denture. The most common complaints with conventional dentures is that they tend to be loose during chewing or talking. It can be very embarrassing to be talking to someone and your denture is moving around, or chewing something and the denture actually falls out.
An implant-supported denture has become the standard of care for many tooth replacement situations. Dr. Justin Wright can provide you with an implant-supported denture that will be comfortable and function as close as possible to your natural teeth.

What are Implant Supported Dentures?

Conventional dentures are made out of an acrylic material and sit on the surface of the gum. These dentures are also known as ‘overdentures’. With an implant-supported denture, the denture is actually supported by dental implants made from biocompatible titanium which are placed into the jaw. Once the implants integrate to the jaw bone, the denture fits snuggly in place. An implant-supported denture can either be fixed, or fixed removable for easy cleaning.

With the state-of-the-art technology at Just Wright Dental, you can be sure you’ll get a restoration you’ll be happy with. To discuss your options, schedule a consultation with Dr. Wright by calling 903-872-8422.

Who Should Get Implant Supported Dentures?

You may be a candidate for an implant supported dentures if you are tired of your current unstable dentures and want a more permanent solution. You may also be a candidate following tooth loss or extraction after a healing period. Once integrated, implants have an over 95% success rate and can last 20 or more years.

Here are a couple of reasons why you should think about going with an implant-supported option:

  • Improves chewing and results in better gut and overall health
  • Restores confidence and self-esteem
  • Improves the overall facial structure and profile
  • Increases comfort by providing a no-slip alternative
  • Some existing dentures can be modified to reduce costs

Taking Care of Your Dentures

If you have removable dentures, you will need to make sure to remove the denture for cleaning just like you would your normal teeth. You need to clean the denture and gum area so that bacteria doesn’t affect the supporting gum. Dr. Wright will also likely recommend that you don’t sleep with the denture in place.

For fixed dentures, you will still need to brush and floss as with natural teeth, being really careful about cleaning around the gum line.

In both cases, you will still require regular check-ups and cleanings.
