Inlays & Onlays

To restore your smile, dentists have a number of options. You might need composite fillings, crowns, bridges, or inlays and onlays. These last two are similar in their outcome, but different in their procedure.

Dr. Justin Wright from Just Wright Dental provides inlays and onlays to his dental patients in Corsicana, Texas. To learn more about the procedures or to set up a diagnostic appointment, you can always contact the office by calling 903-872-8422.

What Are Inlays?

Dentists use certain materials to put inside the tooth. Dental fillings are the definition of an inlay because they involve filling cavities in a tooth with some sort of protective material. Not all cavity fillings are a type of inlay because inlays is fashioned outside the mouth and then attached to the inside of a tooth.Typically, inlays are reserved for more serious cases of tooth decay and larger cavities.

What Are Onlays?

Onlays, also called partial crowns, involve placing something on the outside of a tooth. These are used to cover damage to the exterior of a tooth. Chips, cracks or other irregularities are common examples. Unlike dental crowns that cover the whole tooth, onlays cover ¾ of a tooth. They can be dyed to match the shade of the rest of the teeth exactly. Sometimes, they are used when you have cavities between teeth and are too large to be filled with tooth-colored fillings.

What Does the Dentist Do?

Before taking any action, the dentist evaluates your teeth to determine what you need. If Dr. Wright determines that you need an inlay or an onlay, he will make a model of your tooth.

Indirect Onlays – When you first arrive, your dentist gets your tooth ready by removing tooth decay. Once the tooth is prepared, he creates a model of the tooth’s structure and then sends it to a dental laboratory. Onlays take a few weeks to manufacture, forcing you to have a temporary filling to preserve the tooth. During the second dental visit, the temporary filling is removed, and the dental onlay is placed on the tooth.

Direct Onlays – For direct dental onlays, Dr. Wright does the same prep work, and the tooth is filled with composite resin material. The filling is molded and hardened in an oven and then added to the tooth. But now, there’s a high-tech option for making direct dental onlays. Some dentists opt for a more high-tech version of creating onlays and inlays.

Inlays and onlays can correct gaps in teeth, overly large cavities, space issues and more. Onlays are considered a minimally invasive procedure that don’t hurt during the process or after Dr. Wright is done.

Dr. Wright performs both procedures in his Corsicana, Texas, office. He is always happy to discuss the procedure with potential patients.
