Wisdom Teeth Extractions

wisdom teethWisdom teeth, which are the third and final set of molars in your mouth, can sometimes cause a lot of hidden problems. These teeth start to erupt in the late teens or early twenties and can at times be misaligned or may not have room to come into the mouth.

Most experts recommend that they be extracted before they start to cause problems. Dr. Justin Wright will take X-rays to tell you whether you need wisdom tooth extraction or not. He is an experienced dentist and has performed wisdom tooth removal surgery on a number of patients.

With today’s modern techniques and pain management medications, wisdom teeth extraction doesn’t have to be intimidating. If you delay getting your wisdom teeth extracted, as time passes, the process can become even more complicated. As you age, the bone gets tougher which could lead to problems after the surgery like heavy bleeding, numbness or fractured removal of the teeth.

Why Should My Wisdom Tooth Be Extracted?

There are many reasons why Dr. Wright may suggest an extraction after he has properly analyzed your X-ray. But mainly, there are two reasons why it is imperative to remove a wisdom tooth.

  • Misalignment: One of the most common problems with wisdom teeth is that they are often misaligned. These teeth may be positioned horizontally or angled towards second molars, which can not only create problems in chewing, but can also damage the jawbone, nerves and overall facial structure. Just Wright Dental has successfully treated many patients who have had misaligned teeth.
  • Impacted: Another reason wisdom tooth extraction is often suggested is because the tooth may be impacted. This means that the tooth may be enclosed within the jawbone or soft tissue. This makes it difficult to break through the gum completely. If the tooth remains partially exposed, it could give bacteria a chance to settle beneath the flap of gum on top of the tooth and infect the area. This in turn will cause pain, stiffness, swelling and even a fever. These teeth are more prone to gum disease and will make it difficult for you to brush and floss effectively because they are so far back in the mouth.

What Can Dr. Wright Do?

Once Dr. Wright has examined your mouth, he will develop an extraction plan. He will discuss the procedure with you in detail. Wisdom tooth extraction is generally performed under intravenous (IV) sedation) so you won’t remember the procedure. Dr. Wright will also give you a local anesthetic to numb the area so that when the sedation wears off, there will still be an anesthetic working to alleviate discomfort.
