Dental Implants

dental implantsPlastic dentures offered individuals the opportunity to replace missing or decayed teeth, ensuring that they flaunt a wonderful smile. However, dental technology has evolved since the first set of dentures saw the light, offering a more permanent solution: dental implants. This surgical component has revolutionized the way dentists replace missing teeth and has become the standard of care.

Why Should I Have a Dental Implant?

Dental implants can be used to replace single teeth with a crown or act as supports for a bridge or denture. Dental implants not only provide the most stable result possible, but also help preserve the underlying bone. The titanium alloy of dental implants has have been proven to integrate seamlessly with the jaw bone, providing a stable, natural tooth‐like restoration. If you lose your teeth as a result of an accident, disease or trauma, Dr. Justin Wright will discuss the possibility of replacing that tooth or teeth with a dental implant.

What Can I Expect During Dental Implant Placement?

After your consultation with Dr. Wright and once you decide that dental implant placement is the right treatment for you, your procedure will be scheduled. An overall treatment plan may involve bone grafting to ensure that the underlying bone is capable of supporting the implants. Your dentist may decide to carry out this procedure at the time of extraction, at the same time as the implant, or as a separate procedure.

The site will then be opened, the implants screwed into prepared holes in your jawbone, and the area closed with stitches. A healing abutment will be attached to the implant so that a temporary crown or denture can be attached and to help the gum tissue heal properly around it. Once the implant is integrated (within three months or longer if bone grafting was done), the final crown, bridge or denture restoration will be placed.

Are Dental Implants Painful?

Thanks to the advancements in pain management medications, the placement of a dental implant will cause less pain than a root canal or extraction. Many patients report not feeling any discomfort at all when implants are placed by a skilled and experienced dentist.

Will My Dental Implant Last?

Implants have a 95+ percent success rate and, once integrated to your jaw bone, can last for 30 years or more. They will ensure that the bone in that area stays healthy, and, with proper cleaning and care, can help your gums stay healthy as well.

Once the implant has successfully fused with the bone, it is as durable as your natural teeth. You can eat and drink anything you want without worrying about the implant breaking. No one will be able to tell the difference between your natural teeth and your implant‐supported restoration. If you have a broken or damaged tooth that you think can be substituted with an implant, book your consultation appointment with Dr. Justin Wright today.
