Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry

child dentist treat baby teeth under with dental curingHave you ever been scared to go to the dentist? Do you dread the sound of a dental drill or tremble with fear at the thought of just sitting in a dental chair? Do not worry; you are not alone in this. A lot of people have the same dental phobia, which is possibly the result of a negative experience you had with the dentist when you were visiting as a child. If the thought of going to the dentist’s office is your worst nightmare, there is a way you can get the treatment you need without succumbing to your fears: sedation dentistry. Sedation can be used for any dental procedure, be it an invasive procedure like tooth extraction or root canal treatment or a simple tooth cleaning. While it keeps you relaxed, it can also enable your dentist to carry out your treatment more efficiently. The level of sedation used depends on a number of things including the extent of your anxiety.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of medications that help you relax during the dental procedures and, in some cases, ensures that you sleep throughout the treatment. For this reason, sometimes sedation dentistry is referred to as sleep dentistry.

The different general levels of sedation that are used:

  • Minimal Sedation: You are conscious but relaxed.
  • Moderate Sedation: You will be awake or lightly dozing, and won’t remember much of the treatment.
  • Deep Sedation: You are in a deeper sleep than with moderate sedation, but will respond to questions or instructions from the dentist.
  • General Sedation: You are completely unconscious.

How Safe is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry can help you take the first step towards restoring your oral health and overall wellbeing. It enables you to conquer your dental fear and get the dental care you need.

Dr. Justin Wright is fully qualified and trained to administer the type of sedation you need. He will review with you your medical history, including weight and height and any known allergies or previous adverse reactions. He will discuss with you which method of sedation would be best based on the type of treatment being provided and your level of comfort.
